The mobile phone is a worldwide phenomenon which is growing in stature each year. It is hard to believe that the first mobile phones, certainly in terms of today’s models, were around in the 1970s. Lots of people will remember the mobiles of the 1980s, which were the size of a house brick! The current mobile phones are all fundamentally based on the research developed from the 1970s onwards.
In earlier years the sole use of the handsets was to make calls – pretty standard by today’s terms. It seems that whilst the older generation are set on using the phone for its primary purpose, the younger generations have embraced the new applications that come with most modern mobile phones.
As well as making telephone calls, in the UK and abroad, mobile phones can do a myriad of things. One such use is that of text messaging. Predictive text is frequently used and the more astute people can do it with their eyes shut! It gives us a new way to communicate and can be likened to the other growing trend of messaging on the internet. It is approximated the mobile phone users send a staggering 8 billion texts every day. Amazingly, more than 8 billion texts are sent from handsets every day.
Other uses for mobile phones include checking football scores, taking photographs, sending pictures or recording video, listening to music and surfing the internet. With the mobile phone providers keen to have people buy their products, they are finding new uses to keep the present generation, and those to come, with a reason to buy them. Many of the current handsets have functions that are technologically advanced; many phones can read the barcodes of products, track other phones with GPS technology and even help you to ensure that the shelf you have put up is straight.
It is common for people to individualise their phones to their own tastes. One way to do this is add a free ringtone or free theme to your handset which reflects your interests and personality. There is a wealth of places where you can lay your hands on free themes and free ringtones. They may be on the actual handset itself or available to download to your phone. With so many free ringtones and free themes to choose from, it will be almost impossible to find one that you do not like. Using these options is a fantastic way of making your mobile a exciting and practical object to utilise.
Once you have bought a new phone there are plenty of packages to choose from. Pay-as-you-go is one package you can get for your mobile; top-ups can be made by using a shop, your mobile itself, contacting your phone provider or using internet facilities. The other option is to have a monthly contract whereby you pay a set amount each month. Packages you can obtain for your mobile phone will include incentives such as free calls, free texts or free music downloads; this is the provider’s way of getting customers to use their phone for much more than just calling.
Owning a mobile phone is truly exciting nowadays; the handsets come in a myriad of colours, patterns, sizes and shapes. Many of the current phones are designed to be slimline and can easily fit into your pocket- unlike those bricks of yesteryear! As there are more and more mobile phone providers starting business, existing providers are keen to keep customers by employing the most state-of-the-art technology to keep their handsets edgy and exciting.
